V pátek 20. prosince 2009 v půl desáté večer havaroval na rychlíkové trase mezi Moskvou a Petrohradem Něvský express. Neštěstí způsobil výbuch bomby, vyšetřovatelé našli na místě tragédie zbytky trhaviny.
Neštěstí, při němž zahynulo nejméně 26 lidí, desítky dalších bylo zraněno a někteří další se stále pohřešují, mají na svědomí teroristé. Ministerstvo vnitra podezřívá několik osob, žádná organizace se k činu zatím nepřihlásila. V sobotu odpoledně vybuchla nedaleko místa havárie druhá bomba, která naštěstí tentokrát nikoho nezranila. Mluvčí vyšetřovacího výboru teroristický útok potvrdil a šéf ruské kontrarozvědky prohlásil, že vlakové neštěstí způsobila výbušnina odpovídající sedmi kilogramům TNT.
Prezident Ruské federace Medveděv svolal kvůli neštěstí mimořádnou schůzi ministrů a oficiálně vyjádřil soustrast poškozeným rodinám. Současně nařídil úřadům, aby neodkladně poskytly potřebným pomoc. Ministryně zdravotnictví a ruské železnice přislíbily pozůstalým i raněným odškodné.
Co se odehrálo
Cestující z vlaku se shodují na tom, že krátce před neštěstím uslyšeli ránu připomínající explozi. Nejen hluboký kráter u trati, ale zmíněné zbytky trhaviny dokazují přítomnost výbušniny. Se soupravy čítající 13 vagonů zřejmě vykolejily čtyři zadní vozy, poslední z nich byl úplně zničen. Ve vlaku bylo přes 600 cestujících a téměř 30 členů posádky. Vlak vykolejil v obtížně přístupném terénu v lese mezi obcemi Uglovka a Lykošino, asi 25 kilometrů od železniční zastávky Bologoje.
Na místě neštěstí zasahovalo asi tisíc záchranářů a policistů, vrtulníky a obrovské ježáby. V sobotu večer vyprošťovací práce skončily. Některé tiskové agentury označily toto vlakové neštěstí jako jedno z nejhorších v Rusku za posledních pět let. Zraněné sanitky rozvezly do okolních měst, ale i do 250 kilometrů vzdáleného Petrohradu. Na místo tragédie vyrazily rodiny obětí.
Přítomnost Čechů ani Slováků se v havarovaném expresu neprokázala. V Rusku se při koupi vlakové jízdenky vyžaduje cestovní pas, proto mají úřady k dispozici seznam cestujících. Mezi pasažéry ale byli cizinci s finsky, italsky a indicky znějícími příjmeními.
Soustrast v souvislosti s neštěstím už Moskvě vyjádřil Bílý dům, švédské předsednictví EU, francouzský prezident Nicolas Sarkozy, ukrajinská premiérka Julija Tymošenková a polský premiér Donald Tusk. Soustrastný telegram zaslal také předseda české vlády Jan Fischer.
Podobný případ se na stejné trati stal také před dvěma lety, kdy Něvský express vykolejil po explozi výbušniny uložené na kolejích. Tehdy však naštěstí nikdo nezemřel, 27 lidí bylo zraněno. I tehdy se jednalo podle úřadů o teroristický útok. (více ZDE)
Trať Petrohrad - Moskva
Tato železniční trať patří k těm nejvytíženějším v zemi. Do provozu byla uvedena do provozu 13. listopadu 1851. Jedná se o jednu z páteřních tratí, která sehrává důležitou roli při přepravě osob a zboží v rámci ruské železniční sítě. Na této trati je využíván stejnosměrný proud.

Nasazením těchto vlaků došlo již v roce 1986 ke zkrácení jízdní doby na 4 hodiny 39 minut. V průběhu let došlo k modernizaci stávající trati a v roce 2006 byla zkrácena jízdní doba na 3 hodiny 55 minut. Na trati jsou nasazené dvě soupravy ER200 a také vlak s názvem Něvskij express, který je tažen lokomotivou tvořenou dvěma jednotkami ChS200.
Nová vysokorychlostní trať
Paralelně se stávající modernizovanou tratí by měla vzniknout mezi Moskvou a Petrohradem zcela nová vysokorychlostní trať. Na tyto plány a přípravné práce bylo ruskou vládou v roce 2005 vyčleněno 200 mil rublů. Na stavbě nové vysokorychlostní trati by se měl podílet jak stát tak i soukromý sektor. Vlaky by zde mohly dosahovat rychlosti 300 km/h a jízdní doba by se zkrátila mezi Moskvou a Petrohradem na 2 hodiny 30minut. V horizontu několika desítek let se počítá s modernizací a zvýšením rychlosti až na 350km/h.
Železnice v Rusku
V současné době se nachází na území Ruské republiky 87 400 km železničních tratí což je přibližně 7 % světové sítě a zaujímá tak druhé místo hned po USA.
